Management Information Systems Undergraduate Program

In general, the field of Management Information Systems aims to enable students to use their own knowledge and skills in academic and industrial fields, based on the university missions, with a wide range of academic curriculum and program in order to enable them to enter the markets where global competition continues in the shadow of technology as qualified individuals. Management Information System, is a field where two different disciplines come together under a multidisciplinary roof, Management and Informatics. Its real mission, information systems and management science, to create theoretical and experimental learning environments in the light of technology, to educate students and thus to raise active individuals in the society and business environment.

The Department of Management Information Systems has a different place in terms of its contributions to the job market due to the individuals it has trained thanks to its curriculum and syllabus implementation, and in this way, it can provide long-term business partnerships between the university and the industry. In a way, this contributes to the mission of the university as a department. In addition, through appropriate research and service pathways, both the academic and business communities can benefit from the Department of Management Information Systems.

Management Information Systems Program Curriculum

Management Information Systems program embraces two different programs, Management and Informatics. Thus, the program’s curriculum consists of courses with both programs. First year students, take mathematics, business, finance, along with algorithms and programming courses. This ensures that the students can apply the learnings from algorithms logic to other courses. By the second year, students begin to gain knowledge in economics, visual programming, and computer networks. Third year is mostly focuses on management courses such as, database management, information technology management. The last year also ensures that the students are ready to work by a mandatory capstone project. Students also can choose their carrier paths by selecting from variety of departmental elective courses.

Program Learning Outcomes

On completion of the programme the student will be able to:

  1. Adequate knowledge in mathematics, computer science and business life; the ability to use theoretical and practical knowledge in these areas in computer system problems and business life.
  2. To have the ability for problem solving and to utilize analytical approach in dealing with the problems.
  3. Ability to develop, select and use modern techniques and tools necessary for the analysis and solution of complex problems encountered in computer system applications; ability to use information technologies effectively.
  4. Ability to work effectively within and multi-disciplinary teams; individual study skills.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written Turkish; knowledge of at least one foreign language; ability to write active reports and understand written reports, to prepare design and production reports, to make effective presentations, to give and receive clear and understandable instructions.
  6. Awareness of the necessity of lifelong learning; ability to access information, to follow developments in science and technology and to renew continuously.
  7. To think innovatively and creatively in complex situations.
  8. Information on business practices such as project management, risk management and change management; awareness of entrepreneurship and innovation; information about sustainable development.
  9. Knowledge of the effects of computer systems on health, environment and safety in the universal and social scale and the problems of the era reflected in computer science; awareness of the legal consequences of computer programming solutions.
  10. To act in accordance with ethical principles, professional and ethical responsibility; information on the standards used in business life and academic environment.
  11. To understand the importance of business ethics and to apply business ethics as a principal guide in both business and academic environment.
  12. To have the moral courage to withstand objective criticism and to have a perspective of self-criticism in the task of business and academic life.
  13. To understand the demands and particular questions of globalization.
  14. To acquire leadership qualities but also to know how to be a team member.
  15. To understand and grasp the full details of theoretical arguments and counter arguments.

Assessment

Course assessment usually comprises a comprehensive final exam and continuous assessment. Continuous assessment can include amongst others, mid-terms, projects, and class participation.

Letter grades are calculated based on the weight of the final exam and the continuous assessment and the actual numerical marks obtained in these two assessment components. Based on the course grades the student’s semester grade point average (GPA) and cumulative point average (CPA) are calculated.

Graduation

The student must complete 240 ECTS and all programme requirements. A minimum cumulative grade point average (CPA) of 2.0 is required. Thus, although a ‘D-’ is a PASS grade, in order to achieve a CPA of 2.0 an average grade of ‘C’ is required. It is also mandatory to complete a compulsory internship in a specified duration and quality.

The department, which is part of BAU Global, also allows the students, upon request, to go to a different university in other cities and countries within the BAU Global family. Since Bahçeşehir Cyprus University is a new university, it has new and state-of-the-art technological equipment. Since the number of students is less, communication with the instructors is provided more effectively and easily.
