Civil Engineering Undergraduate Program

Civil Engineering is one of the oldest engineering branches that has served to the development of civilizations throughout the history. Designing and constructing sustainable living spaces that are functional, safe, resistant to natural hazards and compatible with the environment; selection of appropriate structural systems, construction materials, applications and construction methods; designing, planning and execution of projects; cost analyses and calculations; control and verification of project calculations and site applications according to the civil engineering standards and specifications are some of the tasks that civil engineers are in charge of carrying out.

Civil Engineering Department of Bahçeşehir Cyprus University aims to guide the students to adopt multi-faceted and solution-oriented thinking on the theoretical topics and applications in the fields of Structural Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Building Materials, Construction Management and Transportation Engineering, which are the main branches of Civil Engineering; to train them to be able to follow up science and technology and to improve themselves continuously while being civil engineers that serve to the society and that promote ethics in all engineering applications.

Civil Engineering Undergraduate Program Curriculum

Civil Engineering undergraduate program curriculum includes courses on basic sciences and on the topics of all civil engineering branches with a total of 30 ECTS load per each academic semester. Basic science courses are concentrated mainly in the first two academic semesters in order to provide foundations for more complex civil engineering courses of each branch. After the completion of these courses, the students receive courses on Structural Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Materials, Construction Management and Transportation Engineering, which are the main branches of civil engineering.

These courses are designed to enable the students to receive latest information regarding these mentioned branches and to apply the information that they received on both theoretical and applied aspects, while training the students to gain skills like problem-solving, analyzing, designing, as well as project planning and execution. Beside these technical courses, Civil Engineering undergraduate program curriculum also includes general educational elective courses which encourages the students to improve their skills on other complementary aspects as well.  In addition to these courses, civil engineering students are required to satisfy the requirements of a 30-days long summer internship in which they are expected to observe and learn applications in active civil engineering offices and construction sites.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students who complete the Civil Engineering undergraduate program are expected to acquire the following learning outcomes:

  1. Adequate knowledge in mathematics, science and civil engineering; the ability to use theoretical and practical knowledge in these areas in complex engineering problems.
  2. Ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems; ability to select and apply proper analysis and modeling methods for this purpose.
  3. Ability to design a complex system, process, structural and/or structural members to meet specific requirements under realistic constraints and conditions; ability to apply modern design methods for this purpose
  4. Ability to develop, select and use modern techniques and tools necessary for the analysis and solution of complex problems encountered in civil engineering applications; ability to use civil engineering technologies effectively.
  5. Ability to design, conduct experiments, collect data, analyze and interpret results for the study of complex engineering problems or civil engineering research topics.
  6. Ability to work effectively within and multi-disciplinary teams; individual study skills.
  7. Ability to communicate effectively in English and Turkish (if he/she is a Turkish citizen), both orally and in writing.
  8. Awareness of the necessity of lifelong learning; ability to access information to follow developments in civil engineering technology.
  9. To act in accordance with ethical principles, professional and ethical responsibility; having awareness of the importance of employee workplace health and safety.
  10. Information about business life practices such as project management, risk management, and change management; awareness of entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainable development.
  11. Knowledge about contemporary issues and the global and societal effects of engineering practices on health, environment, and safety; awareness of the legal consequences of civil engineering solutions.

Assessment

Course assessment usually comprises of a comprehensive final exam and continuous assessment. Continuous assessment can include amongst others, mid-terms, projects, and class participation. Letter grades are calculated based on the weight of the final exam and the continuous assessment and the actual numerical marks obtained in these two assessment components. Based on the course grades the student’s semester grade point average (GPA) and cumulative point average (CPA) are calculated.

Graduation

The student must complete 240 ECTS and all programme requirements. A minimum cumulative grade point average (CPA) of 2.0 is required for graduation. Thus, although ‘C-‘, ‘D+’ and ‘D‘ are PASS grades (conditionally pass), in order to achieve a CPA of 2.0, an average grade of ‘C’ is required.

What makes us different

With its special geographical location laying in between Asia, Africa and Europe, Bahçeşehir Cyprus University is in Nicosia, the capital city of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The Civil Engineering undergraduate program in Bahçeşehir Cyprus University offers engineering education completely in English language; enables students to acquire the privileges of other BAU campuses; encourages the students to have interdisciplinary collaborations throughout their undergraduate studies; facilitates the international interaction experiences among students coming from numerous nations and provides high quality civil engineering education with its young, dynamic academic staff that are acknowledged in their fields of specialties.

“BAU GLOBAL” provides BAU Cyprus students the chance to receive education from very different points. BAU Global is able to achieve this through İstanbul, Berlin, Toronto, Washington DC, Batumi, Cyprus, Hanoi, Kyiv, Puebla, Brockville.  “BAU Global” allows students to continue their education in all BAU Global Centers overseas and provides all support related to the programs. Also, toward the end of each academic year, students have the chance to apply for BAU Cyprus summer abroad programs.
