Anesthesia

Anesthesia is known as an important field in the surgical sciences. The objective of the anesthesia department is to train students for helping anesthetists, preparing the environment, using anesthesia equipment, working in the operating room, reanimation department, emergency department, and ambulance, and following innovations in medical practices in anesthesia.

Anesthesia Curriculum

In the practical and supportive learning environment the program provides, a team of internationally experienced lecturers and professors encourages students to explore their individual talents and build their own professional path. The first two years include courses in the basic sciences. In the following years, they continue with advanced engineering courses such as manufacturing technology, production systems, and operations research. In addition to the above subjects, subjects such as engineering design, communication, teamwork, and project work are integrated into the curriculum throughout its four years.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • To bring solutions to the problems that arise in the process of providing health services with knowledge, analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Establishing effective communication with colleagues, patients and their relatives, physicians and other healthcare professionals by considering the professional and ethical values related to the field.
  • To have basic theoretical and applied knowledge supported by textbooks containing up-to-date information in the field of health, application tools and other resources.
  • To be able to professionally evaluate and apply the knowledge gained from basic theoretical and practical courses supported by lecture notes, application tools and visual and objective resources, including applications in the field of anesthesia.
  • To have theoretical and practical knowledge about the field of anesthesia.
  • To be able to perform all the steps of general anesthesia application, to recognize the complications that may develop and to intervene.
  • To know the organization of the health system. Do not reserve your place in this organization.
  • Knowing and applying the principles of work, duties, authorities and responsibilities, professional ethics.
  • To have sufficient knowledge and awareness about anesthesia occupational safety.
  • To be able to perform patient evaluation, material and drug preparation and monitoring before the application of anesthesia.
  • To use correct grammar in written and verbal communication and to communicate accurately and effectively with patients and their relatives.
  • To use the necessary information technologies for this field in the process of providing health services.
  • To have the ability to apply the terminology used in anesthesia and health services.
  • Sharing thoughts and solutions about anesthesia in health services with internal and external stakeholders, verbally or in writing.
  • Knowing and fulfilling responsibilities in emergency situations.

Assessment

Course assessment usually comprises of a comprehensive final exam and continuous assessment. Continuous assessment can include amongst others, mid-terms, projects, and class participation. Letter grades are calculated based on the weight of the final exam and the continuous assessment and the actual numerical marks obtained in these two assessment components. Based on the course grades the student’s semester grade point average (GPA) and cumulative point average (CPA) are calculated.

Graduation

The student must complete 240 ECTS and all programme requirements. A minimum cumulative grade point average (CPA) of 2.0 is required for graduation. Thus, although ‘C-‘, ‘D+’ and ‘D‘ are pass grades (conditionally pass), in order to achieve a CPA of 2.0, an average grade of ‘C’ is required. In addition, it is required to complete compulsory internship in a specified duration and quality.

Our graduates can find job opportunities in a wide variety of fields, including: Program graduates may pursue employment opportunities at surgery departments of the state and private hospitals as well as polyclinics. Today, hospitals in TRNC and TR have operating rooms. For this reason, the need for trained personnel in hospitals is increasing day by day. Anesthesia technicians are needed in institutions and organizations affiliated to the Ministry of Health, state and social insurance hospitals, University hospitals, and private hospitals and polyclinics outside of public institutions constitute a serious employment alternative for graduates of this program.
